Impact emerges in 2020, in Cape Verde, created by two Portuguese architects: Inês Alves and Lara Plácido

It consists of a building system which incorporates recycled plastic to reduce urban waste and the impact on the environment.

Impact, the project and process, is described in this website created for the Porto Design Biennale:  projetoimpact.org. This covers the 3 month residence in Ribeira da Barca on the island of Santiago, where the team worked with the local women who extract the aggregates, an activity which has been the main source of income for families for several generations.

As a result of a collaborative co-design process, a paving block was created. Inspired by and reinterpreting the panu di téra pattern, each block contains the recycled equivalent of one 1.5l PET bottle.

"Grain" is an online exhibition selling photos of the main participants of Impact: the local women extracting the aggregates. All sales proceeds revert towards the formalisation of Impact in Ribeira da Barca, via the creation of a production facility for the paving blocks (see "A Concrete Project" in Exploratory above).
